A ROWVA District 208 school bus was involved in a two-vehicle accident in Wataga early Wednesday, Jan. 19, sending one student to the hospital.

The bus driver, James J. Swanson, 64, told law enforcement he was southbound on Taylor Street around 7:47 a.m. when he slowed at the intersection of East Willard Street. He did not see any approaching traffic and continued into the intersection, where he collided with a second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, Eli W. Calkins, 73, was westbound on East Willard Street when he saw a school bus slowing to a stop at the intersection of Taylor Street. Calkins, having the right of way, continued west into the intersection when the school bus collided with Calkins’ vehicle.

The school bus was carrying 25 students. A 9-year-old student was taken to OSF St. Mary Medical Center. Details were unavailable.

Swanson was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection.
