The Galva Lions Club recently enjoyed listening to Jannifer Powelson discuss her new children’s book, Rachel and Sammy Visit the Prairie.

Powelson is the resource conservationist for the Stark County Soil and Water Conservation District. A certified professional in erosion and sediment control, she discussed the process of writing, doing photography, getting publishing, and coordinating the illustrations.

The 2009 book is a junior field guide for children interested in learning about the prairie in a fun way. The book follows a raccoon and a skunk as they learn about life and 20 different plants and flowers in a Midwest prairie.

A rural Atona native, Powelson had done her master’s thesis on raccoons and had wanted to combine her interests in writing, photography and conservation by developing the book. She hopes to write additional children’s books including one on life in a forest. The prairie book is available from on-line sources and local stores in Princeton, where she lives.
