After spending an extended time away from the home mats, the Canton High wrestling squad finally made its home debut Wednesday evening against Orion in the CHS South Gym.

Unfortunately for the Little Giants, they would come up just short against the Chargers, dropping a 39-36 decision. Canton’s record slipped to 7-5 in dual meet competition.

“It felt very, very good to wrestle at home,” said Canton coach Zach Crawford. “We’ve had a long season on the road with lot of road matches so far. I like to see the crowd here and all the support we got from family and fans. It was awesome.

“Overall, as a team, I thought we wrestled really, really well,” he added. “We showed a lot of heart and showed a lot of grit in a lot of the matches.

“That’s the way it is sometimes,” said Crawford. “They’re a very good team, very well-coached. We knew it was going to be that way coming in.

“Orion traditionally is a very good wrestling team with a lot of good kids.”

Canton wrestlers recorded five wins by pinfall and one by forfeit. But Orion would capture eight matches on the night, three by pinfall, three by decision and two by forfeit.

“In the matches where we could’ve rolled over and given up a lot of bonus points, instead we fought,” said Crawford. “Even in the matches we lost, we kept it as close as we possible could.

“It was nice to see our guys looking over at the bench, looking at each other for moral support,” he added. “I like to see that.

“We just have some small things that we have to work on to get ready for regionals,” said Crawford.
