Trailing Metamora 38-37 at the end of three quarters, the Canton Lady Giants outscored the visitors 26-7 in the final eight minutes in defeating the Lady Redbirds 63-45 Tuesday night.

Coach Layne Langholf’s team improves to 14-10 overall and to 5-6 in the Mid-Illini Conference.

Both teams had their moments in this game, but in the end, the winners did what it took to earn a victory. The Lady Giants finished with just 13 turnovers, five of them in the first quarter. In addition, the winners received four 3-pointers, all in the second quarter, from Anna Plumer. Then in the fourth quarter, Canton put the game away by hitting 18 of its 20 free throw attempts.

Metamora had the better start of the two teams, jumping to a quick 5-0 lead. The Lady Giants battled back with a field goal apiece from Cassidy Fawcett, Abby Swope and Nico Grisolano. But the Lady Giants still found themselves trailing 14-6 at the end of the quarter, as the Lady Redbirds closed out the quarter’s scoring on a 3-pointer from Abby Coates.

A pair of 3-pointers from Mamie Ambrosch increased Metamora’s lead to 20-10 with less than two minutes off the clock in the second quarter before Brooke Henry’s put-back basket cut two points off of her team’s deficit.

It was Plumer’s time to shine beginning at the 3:36 mark. All the sophomore did was hit three consecutive 3-pointers in 1:24 to give her team a 22-20 lead. She canned another 3-pointer with 1:05 left on the clock before Fawcett’s 2-pointer gave the Lady Giants a 29-22 lead at the break.

Langholf’s team led by 10 points early in the third quarter before the Lady Redbirds stepped up to the plate. Coach Brianna Morrow’s team received six points from Coates and a 3-pointer apiece from Asiana Williams and Sierrah Seals to get back into the game. It turned out to be Coates’ field goal with one second left which gave her team its one-point lead at the end of the quarter.

As previously mentioned, the final quarter belonged to the Lady Giants. A put-back basket from Tori Oaks regained the lead for her team. Two baskets from Henry increased Canton’s lead to 45-38 with 4:51 left in the game.

A pair of baskets from Metamora cut Canton’s lead to 45-42 with 4:23 left on the clock. The Lady Redbirds though did not score again until Seals canned a 3-pointer from the right corner with just 10 seconds left in the game.

And while the Lady Redbirds went cold from the field, the Lady Giants made hay from the free throw line. In the final 4:13, Fawcett (10 of 10) and Plumer (6 of 8) put the game on ice.

“Anna’s threes in the second quarter were huge,” said Langholf. “The girls were looking to get her the ball. Brooke (Henry) also had some big baskets and was nice to see her rewarded for all of her work through the years.”

Plumer led the Lady Giants in scoring with 24 points. Fawcett finished with 18. Henry scored eight. Grisolano chipped in with six points. Oaks netted five. Swope finished with two.

The Lady Redbirds received 13 points from Coates and 10 from Williams.

The Canton sophomores improved to 14-1 overall and to 9-0 in the conference with a 56-52 in the preliminary game. A 13-0 advantage in the second quarter keyed the Lady Giants’ victory.

Alex Chamberlin and Sophie Oaks scored 11 points apiece. Mackenzie Hess added 10 points. Blair Jacobus, Sydney Hannam and Tori Oaks had six points apiece. Karlie Walker contributed four points. Alyssa Smithburger chipped in with two points.

Kaylee Heironymus scored 27 points for Metamora.
