The Canton Ingersoll Middle School wrestling team placed second out of 17 teams at Saturday’s Orion Invitational.

The Canton Ingersoll Middle School wrestling team placed second out of 17 teams at Saturday’s Orion Invitational.


Canton recorded a team score of 184.5 points, trailing only Sterling Challand (257.5 points) in the team standings. Hosts Orion (155.5), Mercer County (150) and Riverdale (131) rounded out the top five.


Oregon placed sixth in the team standings with 128 points. Morrison was next with 121 points with Quincy (113), Olympia (108) and Rock Falls (103) completing the top 10.


Erie/Prophetstown was 11th with 101 points, followed by Camp Point Central (76), Sherrard (71), Galesburg (62), Kewanee (50), Rockridge (34) and Amboy (9).


Canton Ingersoll had 11 wrestlers record top-five finishes on the day, including two champions.


At 95 pounds, Andrew Hedges posted a 4-0 record, winning all four matches by pinfall, in capturing the title. He defeated Camp Point’s Trevor Bonk in 2:57 in the finals.
At 105 pounds, Bryce Walton also posted a 4-0 record in claiming top honors in his weight class. After winning his first three matches by pinfall, Walton defeated Challand’s Walter Reter by an 8-4 decision in the title contest.


At 65 pounds, John Davis placed second. After winning his semifinal match by pinfall, he would be defeated by Challand’s Connor Knowles 10-3 in the finals to finish his day with a 1-1 record.


A trio of Ingersoll grapplers would finish third in their respective weight classes.


At 80 pounds, Trevor Hedges won three of his four matches on the day. He lost to eventual champion Brock Smith of Riverdale in the semifinals. Hedges would finish on a positive note though, defeating Mike Coley of Olympia by pinfall to earn third place.


At 100 pounds, Caden Williams won his opening match before being beaten by Challand’s Drew Kested, the eventual champion, in the semifinals. Williams would bounce back in the third place match, recording a 6-2 decision over Sherrard’s Ryder Roolf to finish his day with a 2-1 record.


At 112 pounds, Joel Skiles also chalked up a third place finish for the Little Giants. After splitting his first two matches, Skiles recorded three straight victories, two by pinfall, to earn his third place finish. He defeated Kewanee’s Kadin Peterson by pin in 45 seconds in the third place match.


At 85 pounds, Jacob Breese was one of two Canton Ingersoll wrestlers to finish fourth in his respective weight class. He finished the day with a 3-2 record, losing to Morrison’s Colton Linke, the eventual champion, in the semifinals and Jerrill Hill of Rock Falls in the third place match.


Heavyweight division grappler Skyler Barker also finished fourth for the Little Giants. He won two matches by pinfall. His losses would be to Orion’s Billy Nissen, the eventual champion, in the semifinals and Morrison’s Thomas Schlafer in the third place match.


Three Ingersoll wrestlers posted fifth place finishes.


At 90 pounds, Joe Norton won three of his five matches. That included pinning Riverdale’s Alex Watson in 57 seconds in the fifth place contest. His other two wins came by pinfall and decision.


At 126 pounds, Trevor Putman finished the day with a 3-2 record, wrapping up with an 11-3 major decision victory over Challand’s Victor Beltran in the fifth place bout. One of his losses came against Quincy’s Thomas Culp, who won the title.


At 215 pounds, Courtney Behymer posted a 2-2 record on the day, defeating Challand’s Xavier Farnham by pinfall in 25 seconds in the fifth place match. His two losses came to opponents that eventually took first and third place honors.
