Friday: CWC 60, Johnston City 46

JOHNSTON CITY - The CWC Bulldogs rode a 30-point outburst from guard Matt Rice to a 60-46 win over the Johnston City Indians on Friday.

The Bulldogs were all business from the start, jumping to a 7-0 lead on baskets from Bryce Northcott, Travis Black a 3-pointer from Rice. CWC led 13-7 after the first quarter.

The lead moved to 17-7 early in the second quarter, with four quick points from Rice as he continued to heat up. By halftime the Bulldogs had moved the lead up to 28-12, closing the half on a nifty set-play pass from CWC quarterback Jake Simon to Rice.

The Indians made their only run in the third quarter as they closed within 35-28, cashing in on some Bulldog turnovers. But a 3-pointer from Simon and a three-point play from Rice moved the lead up to 41-28 as the teams entered the final quarter.

Johnston City’s 6’2” EJ Thompson came alive for 14 points in the fourth quarter, most of which came after CWC’s Justice Stubblefield had been switched off after receiving his fourth foul.

“We decided to put Bryce and Matt on their shooters and I was able to get good help from Travis and Jake to slow him down,” said Stubblefield.

Rice had 10 points of his own in the quarter, with his 30th and final point coming late in the period to break the Rice family single-game scoring record. Matt’s shooting on the night was 7-8 from two-point range, 4-7 from three and 4-4 at the line.

“I just go it rolling there for awhile,” said Rice.

“The kids played really well, especially in the first half,” said CWC Coach Kevin Wolff. “Matt had a tremendous game and Travis owned the boards tonight.”

BENTON - One day after Matt Rice’s 30-point game, CWC’s Travis Black spearheaded a 63-54 win with a sparkling 29-point, 15-rebound performance against the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats at the 2017 Rich Herrin Classic in Benton.

Both teams had played Friday night games and started a little slowly with the 11:30 a.m. tipoff. The Bulldogs were further hampered with two players missing - Justin Lamp (injury) and Bryce Northcott (illness). Colton Yates got the start for the Bulldogs and played well, bringing his football toughness mentality to the court, but the Wildcats led 15-11 after the first quarter with the help of three 3-point shots in the period.

By halftime the Bulldogs had fought back to a 24-24 tie, with Black scoring half of CWC’s points.

The teams traded the lead until late in the third quarter when a spurt by Black put them ahead for good. Black scored in about every way possible with 11 points in the period to give the Bulldogs a 44-38 lead heading to the final quarter.

Jake Simon’s reverse layup to start the fourth quarter (2 of his 11 second-half points) was the start of run that gave the Bulldogs a big lead which they rode to the end.

“The kids just played tremendous,” said CWC Coach Kevin Wolff. “We knew it was going to be tough with the kids out and playing so soon, but Colton Yates came in and played a fantastic game, and Travis was a monster today with his points and rebounds.”

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday night at Eldorado.
