The Illinois Department of Transportation (Region 4/District 7) cautions motorists that annual maintenance striping will begin May 8 on state highways within the region.

"The pavement-striping equipment travels at a speed of approximately 15 miles per hour when applying the paint," said Mike Worthey, traffic operations unit chief. "Motorists should be alert, be patient and pass only when it is safe to do so."

More than 2,000 miles of pavement in District 7 will have fresh center lines, edge lines and no-passing zones by the end of October.

District 7 includes Clark, Clay, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Edwards, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Lawrence, Macon, Moultrie, Richland, Shelby, Wabash and Wayne counties.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to signs in work zones, obey posted speed limits, restrain from using mobile devices and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
