Mid-County junior Elizabeth Whitford picked the perfect time to play one of her better rounds of the high school golf season.

With an 84 Monday at the Class 1A Metamora Sectional, Whitford earned her first trip to the girls state golf tournament.

Whitford’s 84 at Metamora Fields Golf Course earned the seventh of 10 state qualifying berths up for grabs.

Pontiac’s Ali Schrock was the sectional medalist with a round of 67.

Whitford earned her trip to the sectional by shooting 94 Wednesday (Oct. 4) at the Putnam County Regional. That round at Edgewood Park Golf Course gave the M-C junior the second of 10 individual berths into the sectional.

The 36-hole state tournament opens Friday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. The top 25 players earn All-State honors.

Boys sectional golf tourney suspended

Mid-County’s Mason Kaiser and Matt Graves endured a soggy Tuesday at the Class 1A Havana boys sectional golf tournament.

Kaiser was seven holes into the round and Graves was on his eighth hole when the rains came at Crane Creek Golf Course near Kilbourne.

After nearly a two-hour delay, the sectional was suspended and resumed at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Kaiser was 5-over par Tuesday when the rain came and Graves stood at 9-over par.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
