Whitford finished 67th in the Class 1A girls state tourney at Decatur, while the Spartans surged on Saturday to a fifth-place finish in the Class 1A boys state tourney at Bloomington.
Whitford shoots 184
Whitford, a junior at Galva High School, opened the state tourney Friday with a round of 94 at Red Tail Run Golf Course and closed Saturday with 90 for a 36-hole total of 184.
Whitford started Friday’s round withconsecutive pars on Red Tail Run’s back nine, but followed with three straight double bogeys and a triple bogey to go out in 48. She made par on her final hole of the day to shoot 46 on the front nine and finish with 94, which put her in 69th after 18 holes.
Saturday’s round featured another 46 on the front side and 44 on the back nine, highlighted by a string of three straight pars.
Her 184 total placed Whitford in a tie for 67th in her first trip to the state meet.
Whitford is the first Galva High School girl to advance to the state tournament since Samantha Hainline qualified in 2006 and 2007. Hainline earned All-State honors her senior year with a ninth-place finish in Carbondale.
Spartans rally for fifth place
After finishing the first day of play at Prairie Vista Golf Course in ninth place, Ridgewood rallied on Saturday and climbed to a fifth-place finish in the Class 1A boys state golf tournament.
Ridgewood posted a 344 team total Friday, led by 78 from freshman Thomas Bumann. Also counting for the Spartans were Levi Swanson with 79, Riley Nelson 92 and Ganon Greenman 95.
The Spartans bounced back on Saturday and fired 334 to move up four spots in the team race. Bumann once again led the way with 80, followed by Swanson 81, Greenman 85 and Nelson 88.
With his 158 total, Bumann finished tied for 15th and Swanson placed 21st at 160.
Ridgewood earned its trip to state by winning the Havana Sectional Wednesday (Oct. 11) at Crane Creek Golf Course.
Led by 76 from Thomas Bumann, the Spartans posted 326 to hold off Pleasant Plains at 332 and Williamsville at 337 to win the team title.
Also counting for the Spartans were Swanson with 82, Nelson 83 and Greenman 85.
M-C’s Kaiser two shots shy
Mid-County senior Mason Kaiser came up two shots short in his bid for a state golf berth at the Class 1A Havana Sectional.
After play was suspended by rain on Tuesday (Oct. 10), Kaiser and the field returned to Crane Creek Golf Course the following day to complete the round.
Kaiser shot 42 on his opening nine, the back nine, and finished the round with 40 to shoot 82.
A pair of 80s snagged the final two individual state berths.
Mid-County’s Matt Graves closed his high school career with 91 at the sectional tourney.
