Made-to-order sub sandwich station, walk-in beer cave among the additions

A bigger and better Casey’s General Store is coming to Galva.

Construction crews arrived on site Oct. 30 to start work on a building expansion that will feature a made-to-order sub sandwich station, walk-in beer cave, and larger more handicapped-accessible restrooms.

“I have been pushing this — along with every single one of my supervisors — for years now,” said Lacey Burris, manager of the Galva Casey’s for the past nine years.

She said the Galva store has been on the company’s expansion list for several years, and the project finally received the green light last month.

“They see the needs of the town. A lot of the expansions took place in towns with larger populations,” Burris said of the company’s expansion process. “Then they start working their way down to the smaller towns and stores.”

Construction is taking place on both the east and west ends of the building. The actual expansion to help create the sub sandwich station, beer cave and restrooms is taking place on the east side where the building is being extended 16 feet. On the west side, workers are building an outdoor grease trap.

Burris said there’s no set timetable on the project.

“They’ve run into some issues that they didn’t foresee, so it’s kind of up in the air how long it’s going to take,” she said.

During the construction phase, Casey’s customers will encounter some limited parking space and the normal dirt and dust that comes with building expansion.

“We’re trying to keep wraps on that,” Burris said.

Once the outdoor construction is complete, Burris said the store will shut down for no more than four business days to finish the inside work.

Burris said the store will continue to be open 24 hours when the construction is complete and could eventually add pizza delivery service.

“We’re all extremely excited to have this happening — finally,” Burris said.
