Mike Massie, partner at Massie & Quick Law Firm in Galva, received the National Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Cooperation award at the NAAE annual convention in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 8.

This award recognizes both individuals and organizations who have given outstanding support to agricultural education programs.

Massie joined the Illinois Leadership Council for Agricultural Education in 2001. A voluntary, grassroots organization focusing on the establishment of a secure agricultural workforce, ILCAE established the Agricultural Education line item within the Illinois State Board of Education Budget. The line item led to the creation of the Facilitating Coordination in Agricultural Education project. Massie played a key role in advocating for the legislation, and under his leadership, funding for the line item increased from $1,881,200 in 2005 to a high of $3,381,200 in 2009.

Massie was also a key player in writing and passage of several key pieces of legislation supporting Illinois agriculture teachers. One example is Public Act 95-153, which established a grant program for the recruitment and development of agricultural science educators. Established in 2009, it continues today as a major component of Illinois’ agricultural educator recruitment and retention efforts.

Professionally, Massie is active in the Illinois and American Bar Associations and has been granted the ISBA Board of Governor’s Award. With all his professional duties and commitments, he still finds the time to advocate for agricultural education.

Each of the six regional Outstanding Cooperation award winners were recognized for their contributions to agricultural education during the NAAE Convention in Nashville. Forrest T. Jones and Company sponsors the plaques for the NAAE Outstanding Cooperation award.
