Lady Cats start 2-1 at Princeville with wins over Midland and Peoria Heights

The start wasn’t promising, but the end result was a win for the Galva boys basketball team in the opening round of the 90th Princeville Holiday Tournament.

The Wildcats erased an early 8-0 deficit and rolled to a 53-36 victory over Henry Tuesday to earn a trip to the tourney semifinals.

Galva, the three seed at Princeville, matched up with second seed Brimfield in Wednesday (Dec. 27) night’s first semifinal game. The tourney concludes Thursday with the seventh-place game at 2 p.m., fifth-place game at 3:30 p.m., third-place game at 6:30 p.m. and championship game at 8 p.m.

The Mallards scored the game’s first eight points Tuesday, including six points from Schuyler Hughes, and led 8-6 at the quarter.

Galva buckled down defensively in the second frame and allowed just one Henry hoop as a 15-2 burst put the Wildcats in front 21-10 at the break. Ethan Peterson closed the half with consecutive 3-    pointers to increase Galva’s lead to     double digits.

Cooper Hoxworth scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter, and Mason Kaiser added a pair of treys as Galva stretched its lead to 37-22.

The advantage grew as large as 20 points in the final frame as the Wildcats improved to 9-2 on the season and earned its semifinal berth.

Kaiser joined Hoxworth in double     figures with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Peterson finished with nine points, also all on treys.


Lady Wildcats 2-1 at Princeville

The Galva girls basketball team opened the seventh annual Princeville Holiday Tournament with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday, but fell to 2-1 with a 59-55 loss to Bushnell-Prairie City in Wednesday’s opener.

The Lady Cats rolled to a pair of wins Tuesday, handling Midland 63-47 in the first game and blowing out Peoria Heights 50-17 in the nightcap.

Galva enjoyed an 11-10 edge at the quarter in game one against Midland. Brynn Patty and Emilyann Wexell tallied six points each in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 27-20 at the break.

Wexell added six more points in the third quarter as the Galva lead grew to double figures, 43-33, and Patty and Hannah Anderson combined for 14 points in the final frame to seal the victory. 

Wexell led four Lady Cats in double figures with 17 points. Patty finished with 16 points, followed by Anderson 12 and Darrah Schilling 10.

The Galva girls pulled away early in Tuesday’s nightcap with Peoria Heights.

The Lady Cats raced to a 13-2 lead at the quarter, and held PH scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the process.

Galva’s lead ballooned to 30-10 at the half and 46-14 after three frames.

All nine players on the Galva roster scored in the win, led by Josie Berry with 13 points. Darrah Schilling chipped in with nine points and Josie Willams added eight.

The Lady Cats returned to Princeville Wednesday for another doubleheader, and dropped their opener to Bushnell-Prairie City 59-55.

Galva led 28-26 at the half, but couldn’t find an answer for B-PC’s Madison Allen. B-PC moved in front 39-37 after three quarters, and Allen scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Spartans to the win.

Hannah Anderson topped Galva with 17 points, followed by Darrah Schilling 16 and Josie Berry 10.

The remainder of Galva’s schedule at the tourney featured the host Lady Princes Wednesday night and Elmwood Thursday morning at 9. The Lady Cats are 8-7 on the season entering the final two tourney games.
