$25,000 grant award will help fund 10-week summer concert series in Wiley Park

Galva is fast becoming a summer music destination.

The Galva Arts Council was named one of 15 winners in the 2018 Levitt AMP Grant Award competition.

Each year, 15 non-profit organizations from across the country are awarded $25,000 each in matching funds to produce the Levitt AMP Music Series — an outdoor, free concert series featuring a diverse lineup of professional musicians.

“We just received word that we were one of 15 recipients of the Levitt Amp Your City grant! Thank you all for your support through voting and spreading the word,” read a post on the Arts Council Facebook Tuesday.

The list of cities joining Galva as grant award winners also is diverse — Berea, Middlesboro and Whitesburg, Ky.; Carson City, Nev.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Escondido, Calif.; Ocala, Fla.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Sheboygan and Stevens Points, Wis.; St. Johnsbury, Vt.; Trenton, N.J.; Utica, N.Y.; and Woonsocket, R.I.

The matching grant competition was created in 2014 by the Levitt Foundation to bring free and live music to small and mid-sized towns and cities.

Galva was among 25 cities to advance from the public online voting phase of the award competition, and learned this week that the Arts Council entry was one of the 15 winners.

Here’s how Galva’s winning entry is described on the Levitt Foundation website (https://grant.levittamp.org):

“The Galva Arts Council will enliven Wiley Park through the Levitt AMP Galva Music Series, transforming this large underused green space into a vibrant community hub for people to come together and enjoy a broad range of music genres. The series aims to have positive impact on the lives of those who live and work in Galva and its surrounding areas, creating a favorite gathering place and point of local pride.”

The concert series will be 10 consecutive weeks starting the weekend of Memorial Day and running the entire summer every Sunday evening through Labor Day.

Couple the 10-week outdoor concert series with the fifth annual Back Road Music Festival set for Aug. 11, and Galva is building quite an impressive place on the musical map.

Back Road organizers recently announced its headliner, Josh Turner, and Chase Bryant as one of the opening acts. The final two acts will be revealed later this month.
