Mayor Rich Nordstrom read two resolutions that were unanimously approved by the Galva City Council Monday night.

The first resolution stated the City of Galva would observe Junior Achievement of the Heartland on April 5. The resolution declares it is fitting for parents, businesses and other members of the community to join the celebration in an effort to ensure the future success and economic health of our young people and the communities in which they live.

The other resolution declared April 27 as Arbor Day in Galva. It encourages every citizen in Galva to protect our trees and woodlands and plant a tree. 

In other council business Monday:

n The following checks were received by the City of Galva — State of Illinois December sales tax, $19,192; December local share of state use tax, $8,284; January/February personal property replacement tax, $4,079; February income tax, 14,316; February MFT, $5,074; and February video gaming, $1,663.

n The council went into closed session on real estate, but there was no action taken.

n Mayor Nordstrom congratulated the Galva Police Department on its good work lately on several crime matters.

n The bathrooms at Wiley Park will be closed after Easter for remodeling. They are expected to reopen in May.

n The first yard waste pick-up will be Friday, April 6. All bags must be out early Friday morning, and all bags must be paper and have a sticker attached. Yard waste will be picked up the first and third Fridays of the month.

n Shawn Kendall was congratulated for winning the Fast Pitch Competition for his travel business.

n Second ward alderman Jim Hartman asked Police Chief Kraig Townsend if he talked to B.J. Cornwall, owner of Road Trip Bar and Grill, about fixing the upper part of his building where bricks had fallen. Townsend reported that Cornwall said, “He had talked to someone and was waiting when time and weather allowed."

Second ward alderman Rich Volkert was absent from the meeting.
