The efforts of two Galva High School track and field athletes were recognized by the Galva School Board at its June meeting.

Galva Junior-Senior High Principal Jerry Becker read a commendation honoring Class 1A state triple jump champion Peyton Sopiars and state track qualifier Caelin Foley.

"It is my honor and privilege to recognize and commend Galva Wildcats Caelin Foley and Peyton Sopiars for qualifying and competing in the 2018 Class 1A Illinois State Track and Field Championships,” Becker said. “Both athletes had very successful seasons of track and field leading up to the state championship.”

“Caelin won several individual running events in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs this season — posting wins in the Lincoln Trail Conference meet in the 1600-meter with a time of 4.46.88 and the 3200-meter with a time of 10:52.5. Caelin finished the season with a 20th-place effort in the 3200 with a time of 10:19.25 at state.”

“Peyton continued to break this own personal record and eventually the Galva High School record with his distances in the triple jump this year. He jumped 44-4 1/4 at the Knoxville Sectional meet, which qualified him as the state's top sectional triple jump winner going into the state championships.”

“His jump of 45-0 3/4 during the state preliminaries was long enough to win the Class 1A state championship in the triple jump event and it also sets the new Galva High School track and field record. Peyton is now Galva's second state track and field champion.”

“We are very proud of our athletics at Galva Junior-Senior High and these two athletes are truly special. Their success was shared by all of us and we wish them years of continued success in the future"
