Induction ceremony set for Jan. 18 during home boys basketball game with West Central

Three athletes and one team comprise the Class of 2019 for induction into the Galva Athletic Wall of Fame.

The 1961 football team, Larry Ericson (1964), Joel Hagaman (1994) and Alexandra Strom (2013) will be inducted into the school’s Wall of Fame on Jan. 18, 2019.

The GHS boys basketball team hosts West Central in Lincoln Trail Conference action that night. The fresh-soph game tips at 6 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony and the varsity contest.

All past Wall of Fame inductees are invited to attend the 17th annual ceremony.

Following the basketball action, there will be a reception in the cafeteria hosted by the Galva Athletic Boosters.

Here’s a look at this year’s honorees:

1961 football team — The 1961 Galva High School football team finished 7-1-1 overall and in Blackhawk Conference play. 

The team’s defense blanked three opponents, and the Wildcats outscored the opposition 219-71.

Earning All-Blackhawk Conference honors were Fred Bonati, first team tackle; Ray Ericson, second team fullback; and Paul Schmidt, honorable mention quarterback.

Bonati also received honorable mention All-State and was named second team All-Western Illinois.

Ericson was named honorable mention All-Western Illinois and All-Northern Illinois.

Larry Ericson — Ericson was a three-sport athlete at GHS.

In track, he competed in the shot and discus.

In football, he was a three-year starter on both sides of the ball. He was a starter on the 1961 team, which also is being inducted into the Wall of Fame. As a senior, Ericson earned All-Blackhawk Conference and first team Register-Mail honors.

At the collegiate level, he was a two-year starter and letter winner at Emporia State.

He was the first GHS wrestler to qualify for sectional competition at 180 pounds. As a senior, he went 9-0 with eight pins.

Joel Hagaman — Hagaman earned seven varsity letters in track and football. He’s already been inducted on two teams — the 1993 undefeated conference championship football team and the 1994 sectional champion track team.

Hagaman was a kick returner and tight end for the football Wildcats.

In track, he was captain and MVP of the sectional title team. Among his track honors are school record holder in the 100 (11.1 seconds) and 4x100 relay (45.3 seconds); Lincoln Trail Conference champion and state qualifier in the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x200; state semifinalist in the 100 and 200; and Peoria Journal Star Honor Roll Meet qualifier in the 100 and 200.

Hagaman earned four varsity letters as a member of the Monmouth College track team.

He was a member of the Division III outdoor national qualifying 4x100 team and member of 12 conference indoor and outdoor championship teams.

Hagaman is an associate professor of psychology at the University of the Ozarks.

Alexandra Strom — Strom was a standout volleyball and basketball player for the Lady Wildcats.

Strom’s volleyball honors include two-time team MVP; second team All-Lincoln Trail Conference her junior and senior years; team leader in kills, blocks and digs her senior year; and team captain senior year.

In basketball, Strom was a four-year starter and ranks second on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,127 points. Other honors include All-Lincoln Trail Conference honors her junior and senior seasons; Dispatch/Argus All-Star; and Galesburg Register-Mail All-Area Team senior year. She continued her basketball career at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.
