Police are warning the public about a phone scam in the area.

According to Henry County Sheriff Gib Cady, the scammers call cellular and residential phone numbers, then say they are testing phone lines. The person will ask the victims to press “9,” then “0” and “#” then advise them to hang up. By following those steps, the scammers have access to your phone line and any calls they place will be billed to the victim.

Cady said people should contact their phone company or cellular provider to confirm if there is legitimate testing in your area.
