The driver of a car in which a Galesburg man was found dead Friday afternoon in Galesburg said he was just trying to do a nice thing by offering a ride.
Richard Pinkowski, 26, Altona, said he only met David L. Johnston about three weeks before Johnston’s death and had only seen him a half dozen times.
“He was leaving the same place I was and asked for a ride,” Pinkowski said Tuesday.
Pinkowski declined to say where the two had been.
When the pair got to Johnston’s destination, 239 Cottage Ave., Johnston found the doors of the home locked and no one at home.
As the two men waited for the residents to arrive home, Pinkowski fell sound asleep - he estimates at about 1 p.m. The next he knew, police were pounding on the window.
“I was shaking him (Johnston) to wake him up, too, but he wasn’t moving - he didn’t have a pulse. I was completely unaware there was a dead body in my car.”
