Galva High School placed two players in the top five – including state champion Seth Strom – and defeated 44 other teams to win in the 2011 State Agronomy CDE hosted by Illinois FFA on Dec. 11 at Champaign.
Galva, which learned of its win on Friday, amassed 871 points – almost 20 points more than second-place Prairie Central’s 852.55 – to win the state title and earn the right to advance to nationals at the 2012 National FFA Convention in November 2012 at Indianapolis. Iroquois West was third with 818 points.
Strom – who was also the 2010 state champion – and fellow senior Matt Johnson led Galva to the title, which included 165 individuals. Strom recorded 317 points, three more than second-place finisher Lucas Roberts of Farmington, who had 314. Johnson was fifth with 288.5.
Johnson and Strom have both placed in the top 10 in three of their past four years of the competition.
Also aiding the four-person Galva effort were team members Devon Peterson, who finished 22nd, and Cassadee Hepner, who was 55th.
“I am very proud of this group of students for their hard work and amount of time they put into this competition,” said Trish Main, Galva FFA advisor, of her team. “There is no greater reward for students than to set high goals and achieve them.”
