Q: Does my dog, Pepper, really need her teeth cleaned?

A: It is estimated that by the age of three, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats in America are affected by dental disease. Dental disease can become life-threatening if left untreated. The mouth is an incredible source of bacteria and if the protective mechanisms of the mouth are broken down, the bacteria is allowed to enter the bloodstream. Once inside, severe and possible permanent damage can occur to vital organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart.
