David Serven and Ricardo Sandoval were victorious Tuesday in the Republican primary for Knox County Board District 5, with Seth Cocquit finishing in third in a race for two nominations.
Serven topped the poll with 559 votes, edging ahead of incumbent Sandoval who took 546 votes, with political newcomer Cocquit finishing well behind with 177 votes.
Serven, a farmer, was appointed to the board in December 2008 after failing to win a seat in the 2008 general election.
The District 5 primary was the only contest on the Knox County Board on Tuesday. A number of incumbents were unchallenged in the primary.
Incumbent Bonnie Harris defeated challenger Gay Johnson, earning the Democratic nomination for Knox County Regional Office of Education superintendent.
Overall, Harris garnered only 93 more votes than Johnson, besting her opponent by narrow margins in both the city of Galesburg (61 votes) and the rest of Knox County (22 votes).
