An early morning fire perhaps totally destroyed a vacant house in Galva this morning.
Galva, Bishop Hill and LaFayette firemen were called to a house owned by J.T. and Melissa Kelly at 504 SW 3rd Ave. about 2:30 a.m. today. The rear of the house was totally engulfed in flames, according to Galva Fire Chief Denny Tarleton.
The three fire departments were on the scene until between 6:30 and 7 a.m. Four Galva firemen stayed until about 11 a.m., with the State Fire Marshal investigating the scene. The fire remains under investigation to determine the cause.
The Kelly family had moved from the home a little over a month ago. Tarleton said the house was to be rented on April 1. Electricity and gas service remained on.
The fire started in the southwest corner of the home, which was insured, according to Tarleton.
The fire, which was called in by a resident, was so hot that it melted the siding and curled the shingles on the house immedidately north of it.
