Doing Christian ministry is unlike any other work. Because it can affect people spiritually both now and for all eternity, it's completely different from secular work.
But like nearly all other work, Christian ministry can become tiring. It can wear us out – spiritually and physically. At times, we can find it hard to continue in the work.
That's one thing that makes the rest that awaits Christian workers – in heaven – so encouraging to me.
Hebrews 4:9-10 says "There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His."
A rest – for all eternity – remains for the people of God. At that time, we'll cease from all our works. We'll enjoy unending nourishment and peace.
That encourages me to spend myself more diligently now in the work of the Lord. Doing so can make that upcoming rest even better. Commentator Matthew Henry said it this way: "After due and diligent labour, sweet and satisfying rest shall follow; and labour now, will make that rest more pleasant when it comes."
If you're tired – weary of reaching out to others, teaching a Sunday School class, making phone calls to encourage others, attending church business meetings, taking care of church grounds, making meals for people, or myriad other things – take heart.
Rest is coming, and it'll last forever.
