St.Mary's at state

St. Mary’s will be playing for third place in the IESA Class 1A eighth grade state finals after splitting contests on Saturday at the Shirk Center.
It will be the second year in a row this Saints team will play for third place. They took home third place last year as seventh graders while the eighth grade team captured the state title.
St.Mary’s opened the day with a 54-49 victory over Carroll Catholic of Lincoln, the same team that knocked SMS out in the semifinal round as seventh graders. It was a close game with the Saints leading 9-6 after one quarter and then holding a 24-17 edge at the intermission.
Carroll Catholic cut into the margin by outscoring the Saints 16-11 in the third, making it a 35-33 game entering the final frame. SMS won the quarter 19-16 to advance.
Alex Trevino had the hot hand for the Saints by pouring in 21 points. Adam Weir added 16 while Casey Crowley threw in 7 points. Matt Murphy chucked in 6 and Jace Bauknecht and Andy Krenz each had 2 points.
St. Mary’s found itself in the third-place after falling 42-27 to Our Lady of Lourdes from Decatur in the semifinals.
SMS fell behind early, 10-2 after the first quarter, but made a bit of a challenge in the second in closing the gap to 17-13 by halftime. The Saints seemed to run out of gas in the second half, being outscored 25-14.
Murphy and Weir each had 11 points for St. Mary’s (23-4), who will meet Ottawa Marquette Thursday at 6 p.m. Crowley added 3 points and Krenz netted 2 markers.
