Emily Grove earns national track recognition

Pontiac Township High School graduate and current pole vaulter at the University of South Dakota Emily Grove set a personal record, as well as a school standard to be named USTCCCA national athlete of the week.
Grove, cleared 15 feet, 1 inch at the Sioux City Relays last Friday, far outdistancing her previous career best. This made her the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association athlete of the week, which was announced Tuesday.
Grove’s 15-1 vault was good for the South Dakota program record, as well as making her just the ninth collegiate woman to ever clear 15 feet.
Grove entered the 13-5¾ height as the only vaulter remaining in the competition. She vaulted two more times before surpassing 14-10, which was a new personal-best height. She did it on her third try at that height, and then upped the PR three inches on her next effort.
Grove also became the first USD track and field athlete to be named national athlete of the week by the USTFCCCA in Division I. She was named that organization’s Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2014.
