Powered by scores from its defense and special teams, Mid-County defeated Princeville 26-12 at Bill Adams Field in Oneida on Friday night, opening the new era of Cougars football with a win.

Coach Tom Buck – who earned his 100th career victory with the win – said the win wasn’t pretty, but he’ll take it.

“Oh yeah. It at least gives the kids the idea that the system works – and will work even better if we get some things cleaned up and get better execution on the offensive side – it can be successful,” Buck said. “You’re always happy with a win.”

Persons wondering how the Galva-ROWVA-Williamsfield unit would look in its inaugural game liked what they saw early. Matt Shepherd took the Cougars’ first touch of the football 50 yards for a punt return touchdown just 1:10 into the game.

That sparked the Cougars to a strong first half. They tallied touchdowns on a 10-yard run by quarterback Kenny Fogerty, a 38-yard fumble return by defensive back Tyler Johnson and an 11-play, 86-yard drive that ended with an 8-yard TD pass from Fogerty to Coleton Kelly at the end of the first half to put the Cougars up 26-6 at the half.

They then overcame some lackluster play and cramping issues in the second half to hold on for the win.
