ELDORADO — After a well-played victory in Thursday’s late game, the CWC Bulldogs hopes for the Consolation Title at the 2018 Eldorado Holiday Tournament came crashing down in a one point loss to Vienna on Friday.

Thursday night: CWC 71, Anna-Jonesboro 56

Playing in the dreaded 10 p.m. consolation game didn’t faze the Bulldogs as they rode 25 points from senior center Adam Phelps to a 15-point victory over the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats.

Both teams appeared somewhat tired early, as the defenses struggled in a high-scoring first quarter. Phelps picked up four field goals in the first five minutes and Devin Rankin fired in three 3-pointers in the period to give the Bulldogs a 20-15 lead.

The Wildcats were able to make a run in the second quarter with Phelps on the bench with two fouls, closing the gap to 28-27, before a late 9-0 CWC run capped by an Ethan Mahon driving layup at the buzzer put the Bulldogs up 37-27 at the half.

Phelps dominated inside again in the third quarter with 10 points, giving the Bulldogs enough cushion to coast to the win despite foul trouble that had put the Wildcats in the bonus before the final quarter.

Tyler Smith led A-J with 26 points.

Friday: Vienna 55, CWC 54

It was a game of streaks and the Vienna Eagles had the last one and some help from the Bulldogs at the end.

With four minutes gone in the first quarter Vienna had struck first with a 9-2 opening. Then it was the Bulldogs time to get hot, and did they ever. The Bulldogs went on a 20-0 run that extended into early the second quarter and put them up 22-9.

Vienna responded with an 11-2 spurt, but Ethan Mahon’s step back 3-pointer just before halftime sent the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 27-20 lead.

CWC maintained that 7-point margin through the third quarter and the lead grew to 10 points (43-33) after a layup from Peyton Edwards and Ty Barbre’s fourth 3-pointer. Vienna fought back, getting a brilliant 13-point fourth quarter from Carter Bishop. The Eagles took the lead (50-49) at the two-minute mark on a 3-pointer by Bishop. A layup from Adam Phelps quickly put the Bulldogs back on top. The teams traded 3-pointers (Justin Casey and Barbre) to put the Bulldogs ahead 54-53 with 45 seconds left. Vienna closed out the scoring on a jump shot by Casey with 14 seconds left while the Bulldogs missed their opportunities to close out the game at the free throw line (2 for 8 in the quarter, and 5 for 16 for the game).

CWC Head Coach Kevin Wolff summed up the 2018 run at the EHT by the Bulldogs.

“We did some good things here but we’ve got to learn how to finish. We can’t expect to win when we don’t do the things you have to do to close out.”
