ELDORADO — The Lady Bulldogs came up short in two games against quality opponents in the “Purple Bracket” of the 20th Annual Lady Eagle Winter Classic on Saturday.

Morning game: Harrisburg 69, CWC 44

The CWC Lady Bulldogs could not survive Harrisburg relentless 3-point attack in a 69-44 loss. Harrisburg sank 11 shots from behind the arc, including four each from Brooke Meylor and Alli Ferrell.

With the game out of reach in the later stages, CWC Coach Clinton Wolff was able to give some of the younger players some tournament experience in the fourth quarter.

Evening game: Mt. Carmel 49, CWC 35

A scoreless second quarter spelled doom for the Lady Bulldogs in the nitecap.

The Lady Bulldogs had played Mt. Carmel earlier in the season and were unable to solve the full-court press. That was not a problem Saturday as CWC took care of the basketball early. They controlled the pace of the first quarter, continually breaking down the defense out front, resulting in layups underneath and a 15-9 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter could not have gone worse for the Lady Bulldogs as they started having problems executing their offense and settling for jump shots.

“We were having some trouble with their athletic ability guarding us in that quarter,” said CWC Coach Clinton Wolff. A flurry of traveling calls against the Lady Bulldogs and the missed shots led to a scoreless quarter and a 17-15 halftime deficit for CWC.

After some halftime adjustments the Lady Bulldogs regained momentum to start the third quarter, getting two baskets from Mayci Edwards and a 3-pointer from Sydney Lucas to move to a 22-17 lead. The game remained close until the final minute of the third quarter when a couple of 3-pointers and a technical foul shot moved the Lady Aces up 36-28 headed to the final period. The technical foul against the Carmi bench came after the coaching staff objected to a marginal call.

A couple additional 3-pointers from the Lady Aces early in the fourth quarter was enough to put the game away.

The Lady Bulldogs will continue tournament play Tuesday night against Fairfield.
