FAIRFIELD – The CWC Lady Bulldogs worked their way into the Championship bracket and then took home 4th place at the 12-team Merry Mule Invitational Tournament in Fairfield this week.

Game 1 (Tuesday) - CWC 52, Lawrenceville 43

The CWC Lady Bulldogs dominated early (leading 24-9 at the half) and then held off a second hand charge from Lawrenceville to take the opening game.

Abby Vaughan led the way for CWC with 25 points. Lawrenceville’s defense made the mistake of letting Vaughan catch the ball on the baseline, from where she is lethal.

Lawrenceville did get back to as close as three points in the second half when the Lady Bulldogs’ shooting went cold. But a sprint early in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer from Janes Smith, two free throws by Julia Smith and a 3-point play from Sydney Lucas put the game away.

Vaughan’s 25 points gave her 1,579 for her career and moved her to second place on the school’s all time scoring list. She surpassed Jessica Minnick’s 1,576 and now trails only Jennifer Goins’ 1,952.

3rd pace game - Fairfield 43, CWC 40

A tired Lady Bulldogs team gave host Fairfield all they could handle but ultimately dropped a 43-40 decision.

“I was proud of the way the girls played in all four games,” said CWC Coach Tracy Steed. “There are some areas we still need to work on, specifically turnovers and giving up too many offensive rebounds, those were the difference makers in the losses. But there were also a lot of good things we can continue to build on.”

Teutopolis defeated Flora in the Championship game. CWC’s Abby Vaughan was named to the All-Tournament team.
