James “Jim” Strom

James "Jim" Strom, 90, of Cheyenne, Wyo., passed away peacefully March 28, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 27, 1928 in Moline, the son of Walter L. and Kathryn Mink Strom. He grew up in Galva where he had been captain of both the football and basketball teams his senior year. In summers he served as a lifeguard at a local lake where he met his future wife, Ann Flynn.  He graduated from Galva High School in 1946. He attended the University of Illinois, graduating from Bradley College in Peoria.

After their marriage, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was on duty from 1948 to 1954. Stationed in San Diego, he taught water survival techniques to Navy pilots who might risk drowning at sea.

After returning to the Midwest, Jim and Ann moved to Peoria. While there, he was asked to join International Business Machines, Inc. in San Jose, Calif., where he became a quality control engineer until he retired in 1983. Jim and Ann decided to move to Cheyenne in 2007 to be with family. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Martha; his wife, Ann; and his son, Steven.

He is survived by his daughter, Jean (Randy) Richardson; granddaughters, Rene (Douglas) Mainwaring and Carla Richardson of Cheyenne; and son David in California and granddaughter Michelle. His three beautiful great grandchildren knew him to be able to "fix anything."

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial will be held. Contributions to benefit any animal rescue are appreciated.
