Effective Jan. 1, some changes have been implemented for the drop off of electronics at Eagle Enterprises Recycling, Inc., in Galva.

Under the provisions of the new Consumer Electronics Recycling Act (CERA), there are 17 electrical devices which are banned from disposal in any landfill within the State of Illinois, and must be recycled. These devices include: televisions (cathode ray tube, rear projection, and flat panel), Computer Monitors (cathode ray tube and flat panel), computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, notebook, and tablet), electronic keyboards (for a computer), electronic mice (for a computer), DVD players and recorders, VCRs, cable receivers, satellite receivers, digital converter boxes, printers, scanners, fax machines, video game consoles, small scale servers, and portable digital music players (that have memory and a battery).

Eagle Enterprises Recycling accepts the 17 listed electronic devices for recycling at their facility at 510 SE Industrial Ave., Galva, during regular business hours (6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday). Electronics are only accepted during these hours, and cannot be left outside the building or at any drop off. Do not put electronics into any curbside recycling cart or drop off anywhere in the area. Illegal dumping of electronics will be reported to law enforcement.

Also accepted at the Galva facility — for drop off and during business hours only — are microwaves, cell phones, Christmas lights, and rechargeable batteries. Once again, do not place these items in curbside recycling carts or and drop off.

In compliance with CERA, beginning Jan. 1, there will be a charge for all televisions and monitors recycled at Eagle Enterprises Recycling. The charge will be $5 per television or monitor up to 27 inches (measured diagonally across the screen), $10 per television or monitor larger than 27 inches, and $20 for rear projections TVs.

All electronics should be in original condition with cords intact.

Any electronics not specifically banned from landfills in CERA are acceptable, but subject to a $0.35 per pound charge.
