Darrel E. Johnson, 91 of Macomb, formerly of Bushnell, passed away at 6:58 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at Wesley Village in Macomb. He was born on Sept. 24, 1926, in Peoria to Frank L and Bertha Doubet Johnson. He married Shirley Strand in Woodhull, Ill., on Aug. 11, 1951. Survivors include his wife Shirley of Macomb; three sons – Michael (Kim) Johnson, Mitchell (Annett) Johnson both of Springfield and Douglas (Karen) Johnson of Geneva, Ill.; nine grandchildren – Jason, Kirsten, Kathryn, Gregory, Andrew, Jacob, Jennifer, Lucas and Jeffry, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Darrel believed that education multiplied one’s opportunities. He role modeled his belief by enrolling in college at the age of 33, ultimately earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and becoming a school teacher for 21 years and touching hundreds of lives. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He also served in a number of positions and in numerous organizations. He served as Justice of Peace in Knox County, village clerk in Henderson, Ill., a scout master, life member of N.E.A., member of Illinois Teachers of Mathematics, the National Psychology Society, president of the Bushnell Recreation Center, secretary of the Bushnell Rotary Club, member of Bushnell United Methodist Church, president of Bushnell Teachers Assoc., life member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge and member of the Bushnell V.F.W.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 at the Bushnell United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m.. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017 at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell, IL where friends may call after 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Clover Chapel Cemetery near Woodhull.
